The Value of Higher Education free essay sample

For many individual students preparing to graduate from high school, wondering whether or not they should pursue a higher education at a university or other learning institute is an issue that weighs heavily on their minds. It is a very difficult decision that depends on many different factors, such as the individual’s personal goals. Some students choose to go straight from high school directly into the workforce after graduating. Other students choose to go into the military after graduating from high school. While these are all different options, recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable. Recent research indicates that higher education is extremely valuable. For, individuals whom attended a university and obtained at least a four-year bachelor’s degree make more money on average than people who have never obtained a university degree according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a study conducted by the United States Bureau of Labor conducted in 2009, it was concluded that someone with a four-year bachelor’s degree makes on average $20,748 more per year than someone without the degree. We will write a custom essay sample on The Value of Higher Education or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In a report done by the United States Census Bureau published in the â€Å"Current Population Report† by ?Jennifer Cheeseman Day and? Eric C. Newburger, it is estimated that high school graduates earn on average $1.2 million throughout the course of a lifetime. It is also estimated in the report that individuals with a bachelors degree will earn on average $2.1 million total throughout their lifetime. As you can see, the facts show that getting a higher education is worth more value financially than stopping an education after graduating from high school. In addition to the high financial value of higher education, higher education also makes individuals much more intelligent than what they would be with just a high school education. The more intelligent an individual is, the better quality of life they are likely to have. In â€Å"Wechslers Measure and Appraisal of Adult Intelligence, 5th Edition† by Joseph D. Matarazzo, Matarazzo states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a high school graduate is 105 points. He also states that the average intelligence quotient (IQ) of a college four-year graduate is 115 points. To quote Sociologist Linda Gottfredson of the University of Deleware, â€Å"IQ scores predict a wider range of important social outcomes than perhaps any other psychological trait; bright people have a tail wind in virtually all aspects of life.† What she means by this quote is that the higher an individual’s intelligence quotient, the higher the quality of life that they will have. This is true because those with higher intelligent quotients have higher problem solving abilities that correlate to better life qualities. In an Australian study studied by Gottfredson, motor vehicle fatalities were studied, correlating intelligence quotients with motor vehicle fatalities. In the study, there was a direct correlation discovered between those with lower intelligence quotients, and higher death rates per 10,000 people. Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh, in the United Kingdom did another study that shows how those individuals with higher intelligence quotients have higher qualities of life than those with lower intelligence quotients. For his study, he looked into the childhood intelligence quotient scores of a group of 80 year olds. In his study, he found that those who scored the highest on their childhood intelligence quotient tests were also the healthiest at age 80. These studies serve as evidence that having a higher intelligence quotient improves the qua lity of your life. College students who graduate with at least a Bachelor’s degree have on average higher intelligence quotients than those students who didn’t attend college, which means that those students who do graduate college with a degree will have a better quality of life than those who don’t. Another reason why getting a higher education is very valuable is because it offers many new opportunities to students that they would be unable to get without having attended a university. Most, if not all, universities and other higher education systems offer many activities in which students will get to meet many other new students. Many students will meet new friends who often become some of the best friends that they’ve ever had. There are also almost always sports, clubs, and other activities to get involved with that would be unavailable to those not attending a higher education system. Many people participate on sports teams in high school such as football, baseball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track and field, and softball, to name a few. After they graduate high school they do not have many opportunities to participate in their favorite sports ever again. Whether it is for competitive purposes or just for enjoyment purposes, universities offer the o pportunities to participate in some of their past favorite sports, or experiment with new ones. Another opportunity that students of higher education systems have exposure to that those who do not attend higher education systems do not have as readily available is the opportunity to study abroad. Studying abroad means taking educational classes in a country other than one’s own. Unless they are particularly financially wealthy, the majority of the individuals that do not attend higher education systems never get the opportunity to live in foreign countries for the entire length of a semester. According to a BBC news report, about 114,000 higher education system students study abroad each year at universities in foreign countries. Studying abroad is a great opportunity for higher education system students to take advantage of. When one studies abroad, they get the chance to learn about another culture through first hand experience, they get the chance to learn how to fluently speak a foreign language by merely being exposed to it for a period of time, and it is very pres tigious to have on a resume. Author W.E.B. DuBois among other successful celebrities studied abroad. He studied at the university of Berlin in Germany for two years. Studying abroad is just another example of a way that higher education systems give their students more opportunities than those who do not attend them. Higher education systems can also be considered very valuable because they provide individuals with life skills that are essential to being successful in life. While studying at a higher education system, one is forced to develop essential time management skills much more so than at the high school level. With time needed for studying, attending classes, completing homework, relaxation, and doing fun things as well, one needs to manage their time in order to avoid failing out. These time management skills help out individuals later on in life. Another important life skill that individuals who attend higher education systems gain is money management skills. Some higher education system students work part-time jobs, but the majority are unable to find the time to do so on top of their schoolwork, so the only money they have for spending is either money their parents give to them, or money that they saved up before going to college. Either way, most students are on tight financial budg ets that require discipline to maintain. Students learn to only spend money on things that they absolutely need, and to save up their money rather than spending it all at once. These money management skills help the students later in life. While attending a higher education system offers many positives, it also offers certain negatives. One negative is the fact that higher education schools are often very expensive. Colleges are expensive, and it is hard for a lot of families to afford to pay for, however this is not a good reason for not attending. If one starts early enough, they can save money, look into financial aide opportunities, and apply for scholarship opportunities to help pay for their tuition. It has already been shown that the amount of money that college students will make after graduation is much higher than the amount of money those who do not attend will make, so if someone can make sacrifices in order to pay for college then when they have a career someday they will make it all back plus more. Another negative to going straight to a higher education system is that people are getting later starts to their careers. Some people choose to work minimum wage jobs, or take other opportunities like opening their own businesses. These options are all respectable, and sometimes do end up making people large sums of money, but the facts given to us by the United States Bureau of Labor show that the vast majority of the time this is not the case. No matter how tempting it may be to take a good wage job right after high school, it is always more financially beneficially to attend a higher education system. In conclusion, the evidence shows us that attending higher education systems is extremely valuable. One reason that it is extremely valuable is that it offers many great financial benefits. Another reason is that it makes individuals more intelligent. Those who attend higher education systems also have more opportunities available to them than those who do not attend them. Attending higher education systems also teach great skills that are essential for being successful in life. In short, higher education systems are extremely valuable

Free Essays on The Rise Of Hate Speech On Campuses

The First Amendment has led Americans to believe in a sense of freedom that does not exist; freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in this country has never been absolute. You can’t yell fire in a crowded theater, solicit bribes, make terrorist threats, slander another, or intentionally inflict emotional distress or be obscene in public. Company Analysis - Google Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Company Analysis - Google - Essay Example After an initial humble beginning with a small start up capital the company grew by leaps and bounds to presently emerge as one of the leading brands of the world with financial strengths that matches the likes of industry players like Apple and Microsoft. The company’s stocks are listed on the bourses of the NASDAQ. Google has a diversified product portfolio that ranges from search engines to software applications, browsers and mails. The main reason for the success of the organization has been attributed to the highly innovative approach of the organization as well as the strategy of the company to keep its products as simple and highly efficient. In addition to this certain other strengths of the organization also includes a unique algorithm for its search engine operations that provides quick and accurate response to web users without any hassles (Google, n.d.). Diversification Strategy of Google Google has a wide array of product offering that range from web browsers to s ocial networking sites and video sharing. The company has diversified into many segments in an attempt to leverage the benefits of the opportunities of the different product segments. The company began its operations with the search engine division. It diversified into the online video sharing and viewing segment by acquiring You Tube which was acquired by the company in 2006 for a whopping 1.8 billion US dollars. The company got a good response as it became the most popular video sharing site across the world with about 150 minutes of video added every hour. However the diversification strategy of Google of entering into this segment has been questioned by many researchers as they feel that the segment only increases the number of uses and adds to the popularity. However the fact that the segment generates only 240 million dollars as revenue towards an expenditure of about 500 million to 1 billion dollars raises serious question over the sustainability of this segment in the long r un. This is mostly because of the fact that every video is free for viewing and there are very few advertisements on the site (Grant, 2009, p.827). The company went further ahead in its diversification plans and announced the launch of its new browser named ‘Chrome’. This browser was launched in 2008 and was increasingly seen as an attempt by Google to throw a competition to its main rival Microsoft which launched the internet web browser ‘internet explorer 8’. The company stated that this product would have the aspect of simplicity and would ensure a complete blend of innovation with simplicity. The company claims that this browser would allow faster access to information and would have better security features and would be compatible with the latest web platforms. Experts however state that the main reason behind this diversification strategy of Google was that the new version of the internet explorer launched by Microsoft had certain protective elements that would delete the cookies which in turn would not allow Google to track down the browsing habits of the users. This was a vital issue for Google as its entire advertising and search engine business model was based on the aspect of tracking users browsing habits. Google believed that the simple nature of the product and its appeal and brand image among the target audience would largely help in giving Microsoft a run for its money. Google also announced that it would launch an operating system that according to experts was a

Has Technology Ruined Family Life?

Has Technology Ruined Family Life? Technology ranges from computers/tablets/phones to the content laced within these devices. Everyone is constantly distracted by their chosen device and even get flustered when asked to put it away. A person spends up to 20 hours on Facebook per week and many of them let other people’s comments affect them – negatively and positively. While simultaneously making our lives easier, technology is rapidly isolating people from the real world. In a sense, technology has ruined family life. Before technology, families would sit around the dinner table to eat or even play games together which is a huge contrast from what they do nowadays. It is a rare occurrence for families to be in the same room while eating and families playing games together is virtually unheard of. Technology does however create a feeling of security as you know where your family is due to phone calls and texts. But what if the family member you’re trying to contact doesn’t answer? You start imagining the worst case scenarios. You panic. You panic so much that you continually bombard them with texts and calls. In reality, they’re busy and can’t answer or just don’t want to. Are children so engrossed in technology that they are missing out on childhood adventures? A number of parents have to coerce their children to go out and play. When I was a kid, I would barely ever be in the house. My parents had to force me to stay in the house to spend time with my family. Technology has a negative affect on children in many different aspects. Children who watch excessive amounts of TV and play too many video games are allegedly more likely to do poorly at school. Reputedly, technology increases the chances of behavioural problems. Many kids are losing sleep due to their minds being overactive and unable to rapidly shut down once they have stopped playing games. Believe it or not, technology is extremely dangerous. The number of people who text while driving is alarmingly high and the number of fatalities this has cause is atrocious. Texting while driving causes 1,600,000 accidents per year and 330,000 injuries per year. Even texting while walking is a danger some people actually think that it is worse than texting while driving. People are so distracted that they may walk into walls, fall down the stairs or step into traffic. A study says the number of people who were killed rose from 4,109 to 4,432 in 2011 as a result of texting while walking. Consequently, people who get distracted by their phone end up walking past where they were meant to be going or step into traffic and end up visiting AE. The content on the internet actually has the capability to ruin people’s lives. Many people are naà ¯ve to the dangers of the internet and believe that they are perfectly safe when signing up for sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. People record their lives rather than actually living them. All the photos posted and status updates mean that pretty much everyone knows what is going on in your life. Who needs privacy? Sites like this are also making child grooming more and more common. Many children are oblivious to the fact they are being groomed in the first place, they only realise once it has gone too far. Numerous amounts of people put their personal details on these sites without a second thought then become hysteric when someone they don’t know contacts them. The worst of them all are dating sites. They’re impersonal and a nightmare. How do you know who you’re really talking to? Do you honestly believe that everything you read is the truth ? Dating sites create an air of apprehension and uncertainty as you don’t actually know who you’re going to meet, it could be anyone. Technology has completely changed morning routines. People are checking their phone before they even move from their beds. Once they actually make it out of their beds, they get ready for the day but they’ve always got their phone in eyesight. Many teens end up being late for school or work because they’re too distracted by their devices which results in them having less time to get ready. The majority of them have to post a ‘selfie’ before they leave the house which takes them at least 10 minutes due to the fact that they take multiple pictures then skim through them picking and choosing which ones they like and which ones they don’t. Many older people post a status complaining about work before they leave and then worry that someone from their work will actually see it so they delete it or they waste time going through their friends to make sure no one from their work is on the list. What’s the point in wasting their time doing that when the y could just not post anything in the first place? Technology makes us ungrateful and competitive. The majority of people purchase a new device but never think that it is that great. If a page doesn’t load we snap and whinge about how horrific the device is. As new devices come out, we expect them to be more extravagant and pleasing. We want them to exceed expectations and when they don’t, we are outraged. We post pictures of our lives on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to update people on what we’re doing but get envious when we see that people are engaging in activities more fascinating than ours. Technology can ruin our relationships with friends and even family. Even though it is easier to connect with loved ones who are in a different country, our jealousy overpowers any other feeling when we see how great their life is in the sun while we’re stuck in the rain. Technology has made our lives easier but as a consequence it has made us lazy. Who needs to get out of bed and get dressed when you can lie there all day and watch Netflix? Many people are missing out on social occasions because they spend all day watching the latest TV series or films. With all the gaming gadgets that are available nowadays, many people are barely ever stepping out of their houses unless it’s unavoidable. Likewise people are googling everything. â€Å"How to tie a tie† gets over 500,000 searches per month and more than 1,000 people even search â€Å"how to boil water.† To conclude, technology has changed many aspects of our lives both negatively and positively but the negatives definitely outweigh the positives. We have all become isolated, lazy and oblivious to the dangers we face when using these devices. Everywhere we go, technology surrounds us. We can’t escape it, but should we embrace it all the time? I think not. Defending Prospero in Shakespeares The Tempest Essay -- Tempest essay

Defending Prospero in The Tempest      Ã‚   In William Shakespeare's The Tempest, the character of Prospero brings about a great deal of debate. Modern literary critics are quick to use him as a poster child for English colonial practice in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Many see him as person who desires complete control of everything around him from the fish-like monster Caliban to his spirit servant Ariel, even his own daughter Miranda. Others believe that Prospero's sole motive is revenge on his brother Antonio and those associated with the established power in Naples and Milan. Taken out of context, these are reasonable conclusions. However, in the development of the play, it is quite clear that these critics are incorrect. Shakespeare does not use Prospero as the symbol of European expansion westward and although Prospero is quite powerful, he is not a power hungry egomaniac. Instead, Prospero is the very figure of a noble father. He loves his daughter so much that he sacrifices everything to give her th e best opportunities for a good life. He is the slave of duty, working for the good of his people. His desire for revenge is also clearly not a motivation as he finds the strength to forgive his brother at the play's conclusion. Therefore it seems that Shakespeare's character is not being used to show the dark side of humanity, but rather the nobility of humanity and the model of a seventeenth century father.    When it comes to Miranda, Prospero can never do enough for her. Prospero's second lines states, "I have done nothing but in care of thee, of thee, my dear one, thee, my daughter" (Prospero, I, ii, 19-20). Although this line can be interpreted many ways, even as an outright lie, the assumption has to b... ...ritical Study. " 336-82. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1991.    Curry, Walter C. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) define as a worldwide standard for the delivery and presentation of wireless information to mobile phones and other wireless devices. As the world is moving towards a net- centric world, where Internet is becoming a world environment, along with the physical environment which acquires information and knowledge from the Internet, WAP has been designed to enable the user to access those information via mobile phones in a small display and limited keys on the keypad. The tourist may not be able to bring along a huge wireless device such as notebook to check for all travel information including airline and reservation, and travel guidelines because it might be inconvenient to them. Project Context A traveler (tourist, or a businessman) or a local people have to travel quite frequently or not frequently, resorts must operate their services 24 hours a day 7 days a week to fulfill the demand for them and providing excellent service to their customers. Although there are guides provided to the tourist whenever they come to visit General Santos City which consist of many information related to resorts, but sometimes it is difficult for them to do the booking as they have to check for the information about location, room rate, and facilities manually. They will have to look through a pamphlet or ask the local people or counters for information. Sometimes, the travelers may prefer to travel by themselves without guide. They also have not done the resorts reservation before they travel. Even though there are many ways such as call booking and web service booking online to serve the tourist but since the tourists are not familiar with the places so they might do not know the contact number and difficult to find Internet Cafà © to search the resort’s information. This system could be a tool that can help tourist for their quick booking. Once the tourist arrived in General Santos City, they might directly go to resorts by taxi without booking and sometime may find out that it is full. If they need to go to other places in the city and do the same thing, it would be inconvenient for them. In line with this, this project suggested that a new tool to be developed to help the traveler do their resort reservation right to their mobile phone. Purpose and Description This project aims to answer and solve the following queries: ââ€" ª What are the basic requirements for resort reservation system via mobile phones? ââ€" ª Is this an easier way to search/browse resort information through mobile phones? ââ€" ª Is this project useful for users to do the reservation system? Wend and Wind

Wend and Wind Wend and Wind Wend and Wind By Maeve Maddox A reader questions the use of wind (rhymes with kind) in the following notation on the website of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA): After expediting your arrival and clearing you to the ramp, ATC has one last function. They will fill out a mandatory occurrence report (MOR), which will wind its way to a flight standards district office (FSDO) where it will be assigned to an inspector. Says the reader, I had always thought, and still believe, that the correct word is wend, not wind, although the former does imply a winding course. Please comment. Both verbs, to wend and to wind, have been with us since Old English times: wendan verb: to turn, direct. windan verb: to plait, curl, twist Wend has been used with different meanings of turn, such as â€Å"to translate/turn a text from one language to another,† but it has retained the connotation of the kind of turning involved in travel or the movement of a river. In Old English, wind had additional meanings such as whirl, brandish, swing, fly, leap, etc. The word is frequently seen in lively descriptions of Old English battle scenes. Its most common use now is to convey the idea of twisting. As we’re discussing wend and wind, I’ll mention a similar verb form, went. Like wend and wind, the verb go existed in Old English. Its past tense was eode. The form went belonged to the verb wendan. Speakers tended to mix up the past of wend with the past of go. In time, eode was replaced by went as the simple past of go. The past of wend became wended. The original past participle form of go (gan) remains with us as gone. In modern usage, wend is used chiefly in the sense of making one’s way, especially in an unhurried manner by an indirect route. It’s used literally and figuratively. Here are examples of recent usage: This was a four-month trek that began in London and  wended  its way through Central  Europe  and on to the Middle East.   We adjourned soon after the first ballet, and  wended  our way back to the restaurant, where supper was already awaiting us. Just before the troops arrived, a federal judge blocked key components of SB 1070 from going into effect as scheduled, and the case seems sure to wend its way ultimately to the U.S. Supreme Court. Even if you dont live near the  sea, much of the run-off from your garden ends up down the drain, which  wends  its  way  down to the  sea  eventually. Wind, with its past tense wound, is used in a similar way to describe a convoluted and slow course of movement, as in these examples: Mules and donkeys strung together in groups of five  wound their way down the mountain  toward the river.   A bill is currently winding its way through the U.S. Congress to give Europeans the right to legal redress. The case eventually wound its way  to the Supreme Court where Ginzburg lost on a  5-4 decision in 1966, ultimately serving eight months in prison. I  saw  their gaunt  figures wind down  the valley, and  watched  them till they disappeared in  the distance.   The Awash River winds down  from the mountains through deep gorges to the plain. My answer to the reader’s question is that either wind or wend works in the context of a report making its slow way to the appropriate office. I’d be hard-pressed to formulate a rule for when to use wend and when to use wind. I think that if I wished to emphasize the leisureliness and intentionality of the movement, I’d choose wend. To emphasize sinuousness and obstruction, I’d choose wind. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Chesapeake colony essays

Chesapeake colony essays Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the region had evolved into two distinct societies. The main factors that influenced the evolution of differences in New England and Chesapeake region were: political, economic and social influences. In the Chesapeake region the economy evolved through trades and agriculture; plantations and staple crops. Tobacco which became the main crop of the region increased rapidly its production, creating the need for labor. As a result of the tobacco plantations the headright system came about, which established that whoever paid the passage of an indentured servant received the right to acquire 50 acres of land and thereby, increasing the production of tobacco and other crops like rice, which became the main crop of the Carolinas. The plantations in this region were to vast causing the development of churches, schools, and cities limited and relatively few. Trades played a big role in the development of this region; in the Carolinas the settlers started to use slave trade, they used Savannah Indians to gather other Indians for their slave trade. However most of the Carolinas prosperity is due to their trade with the sugars island of the West Indies. In social terms, the tobacco plantat ion brought the young people without a family who rather work as indentured servants for ten years and hope to get the portion of land that was promised to them. These indentured servants were mostly young men whom desired to find and easy way to get rich or just make money clouded their minds; as the talked contract for land and yet not a written contract. Many proprietors didnt give them the portion of land that they were promised. As result of this, the free indentured servants moved to the backwoods of Virginia and thereby, invading Indian Territory and creating the clash that is now known as the Bacon Rebellion. Bacon being the leader of th...

Classifications Of Drug Actions - Research Paper Example This plant develops in the Andes area of South America. Diverse chemical procedures create the two principal forms of cocaine: Powdered cocaine - regularly referred to in the city as "blow" or "coke† - breaks down in water. Users can inject or grunt powdered cocaine. Break cocaine - normally referred to in the city as "rock" or "crack† - is made by a chemical procedure that makes it in its "freebase" structure that can be smoked. As they come down from their cocaine high, certain users encounter temporary unpleasant reactions and after effects, which may include agitation, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, and insomnia (Streufert, 2013). During this "rebound" period, confusion, hyper arousal, suspiciousness, and other components of paranoid thinking may also appear (Streufert, 1993).Under the best possible natural circumstances, people report that cocaine elevates their capacity to focus, increments sexual energy, expands their amiability and reductions any previous tim idity, strain, weariness, dejection, or fatigue. Numerous individuals feel chattier, more strongly included in their connections with others, and perkier and unconstrained when high on cocaine. Down from their cocaine high, a few users experience brief unpalatable responses and delayed consequences, which may incorporate eagerness, tension, unsettling, touchiness, and sleep deprivation. Amid this period, suspiciousness, perplexity, hyper arousal, and different components of paranoid deduction might likewise show up.

Elementary-Age Students Identified with ADHD Receive Coursework

Elementary-Age Students Identified with ADHD Receive - Coursework Example Elementary-age students diagnosed with ADHD have behavioral problems that may result in their expulsion from the main setting in which they receive their education. Such behavioral challenges include forgetfulness, sleeping problems, and difficulty cooperating with other students. Such behaviors escalate as a child moves into elementary school, and for that reason, make it difficult to identify their appropriate main setting (Friend, 2014, 179).The results of intervention measures require considerable caution as few studies of intervention effectiveness have been completed successfully with young children. The best combination for young children has not yet been comprehensively determined and thus their main setting requires consistent and immediate feedback (Friend, 2014, 179).The federal government does not collect and publish data regarding the main setting in which children with ADHD are educated. Children with ADHD often have other disabilities, and hence, data from their disabi lity group does not compellingly determine their main setting for education. Students with both ADHD and a learning or emotional disability have to adapt to the least restrictive environment provision of IDEA. Even so, one cannot differentiate the application of this dimension of the law from the annual reports issued about ADHD implementation. It is ambiguous and makes it so difficult to determine the main setting in which elementary-age students identified with ADHD receive their education (Friend, 2014, 180).
